Enhancing the Students’ Digital Skills via BIM-ICE Project
The year of 2021 was very fruitful with the BIM-ICE information modeling events at SPbGASU. The university organized and hosted BIM extracurricular activities, internal and All-Russian BIM-Championships.
Inna Sukhanova, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services and BIM-ICE Project Manager, talked about the students’ digital education: “As you know, all the state procurement projects in Russia shall be presented in the form of the information modes. We are trying to follow the world trends and correspond to the requirements set by the construction industry and our country leadership. Our university has already adjusted the curricula – they include the information modeling disciplines. Many events aimed at enhancing our students’ digital competences are held regularly.
Iurii Stolbikhin, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services and BIM-ICE Deputy Project Manager shared his opinion on BIM education and added that the extra-curricular activities, championships and cases help students to master the digital competences and prepare to the future professional activity.
It was also important to hear from students, what skills and new experiences they have gained while being involved in the Project realization.
Yury Uglenko, a 4-year Bachelor student at the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services, is the wined of the total score and the best in the competence “Electrician” of the BIM extra-curricular course in 2020/2021. Yury took the second place in the team internal competition and became the best in his competence. Besides, Yury took part in WorldSkills Hi-Tech Championship in autumn 2021 in Ekaterinburg.
“Information modeling is becoming more and more in demand and participating in Olympiads and championships really helps to demonstrate your skills and learn something new” – Yury commented.
Maksim Khamidulin, a 4-year Bachelor student at the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services, demonstrated the best result in the com
petence “Heating and Ventilation” at the BIM extra-curricular course in 2020/2021. He proved his best result in the team result and in his competence at the BIM-Championships.
“I definitely recommend all students taking part in the BIM-Championship and other Project events. It is a very good opportunity to show your level, get the beneficial experience in real design and work in teams. This Championship is an annual competition which can give you a chance to acquire new skills and improve those that you’ve already got,” – Maksim noted.
The BIM-ICE will last till September 2022 and the project team have big plans: the student pilot project on the digital building modeling using laser-scanning technology, as well as the Classifier for Construction Information; the extra-curricular course for the HEIs staff; the advanced training courses for the professional community on the topic “BIM in State Procurement” and many other events.
