In October-December 2020 the BIM elective course is being held at SPbGASU within the framework of the international BIM-ICE project (WP2). The course is targeted at the third-year Bachelor students. The main goal is organizing simulation practice with students, giving them basic knowledge and skills in modeling and working with BIM tools, as well as boosting their teamwork professional qualities. Inna Sukhanova, BIM-ICE project manager, Iurii Stolbikhin, BIM-ICE project deputy manager, and other experts – members of the BIM-ICE project team from SPbGASU, are involved in the conduct and organization of the BIM elective course.
The different faculties and departments of SPbGASU are involved in this education event, the total number of participants is more than 160 students. The students are trained in groups to acquire one of the seven competencies (architect; structural engineer; HVAC engineer; WSS engineer; estimator; electrical engineer and construction management engineer), then they are divided into 11 teams and work on a project assignment.
Classes are organized online in MS Teams separately for different sections. For example, students-architects have completed the primary models which include walls, floors, roofs, stairs, windows and doors. In addition, they have created and placed families of ventilation blocks in the models. The structural engineers have learned to design the sheet pile families, while HVAC students – piping and equipment families. The WSS students have created a parameterized family of water metering units, and also mastered the skills of building pipelines.
Electrical students have mastered the principles of modeling power circuits and created a family of sockets. The economists have been given the basics of Autodesk Revit as such training has not previously been included in their curricular. The construction management students have been trained the principles of scheduling in Autodesk Navisworks Manage 2021 and Microsoft Project Professional. A separate lesson on teamwork was held, the principle of organizing storage files on the server and synchronizing with them was explained to the course participants.
On completing the BIM elective course the students will prepare the presentations of their projects and obtained results.
