BIM-ICE is implemented by LAB University of Applied Sciences (Finland) and Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (Russia) in the scope of CBC 2014-2020 South-East Finland – Russia.

BIM ICE Project  – BIM Integration in Higher and Continuing Education” – seeks to accelerate BIM implementation in the field of construction and building design in Finland and Russia. Addressing such topical issues as lack of common terminology in the field and development phase of standardization,  lack of technical know-how and lack of competence in process development, the Project is aimed at improving productivity and quality within the construction industry by developing new training models and increasing the level of education among different target groups.

Key facts

CBC Funding: 479 960 €

Duration: 01/04/2020 – 30/09/2022

Expected Results

In the long-term perspective the BIM-ICE Project will further sustainable methodological support of embedding BIM in higher, professional and continuing education process by means of:

  1. developing pedagogical approaches to BIM education
  2. creating digital open access platform of collected and produced materials for professionals and decision makers on different levels
  3. continuity in education and development via educating HEI staff in BIM philosophy and technicalities.

Target groups

Students, experts and teachers, professionals, Finnish and Russian construction companies and decision makers.

Lead partner

LAB University of Applied Sciences (Finland)

LAB University of Applied Sciences is an institute of higher education operating in Lappeenranta and Lahti. The strengths of LAB include the circular economy, design, the commercialization of innovations and service innovations for health and well-being.

Within the South-East programme area of the CBC funding instrument in Finland, LAB is one of the two higher education institutions that offers degree programmes in Construction Engineering, and the only institution, whose profiling competence is BIM.

LAB is an active partner in national organizations (such as Building Smart Finland). Local industry and for example the cities of Lappeenranta and Imatra, as well as South Karelian Rescue Service, have benefitted a lot from our BIM-knowhow, for example in the form of students’ thesis work and in new process development.

Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (Russia)

Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (SPbGASU), founded in 1832, is one of the leading higher education institutions in Northwest Russia for complex training of specialists in civil engineering, architecture, transport, and environmental engineering. SPbGASU has grand professional and pedagogic traditions and constantly updates technologies, areas and methodology of scientific researches.

SPbGASU experts have got high-level competences in engineering design, calculation and construction of buildings and structures; footings and foundations, soils and road covers, development and test of building materials. The University is advanced in training of personnel and the scope of scientific researches in BIM philosophy and technical skills.

Experiences and carried out activities include teaching disciplines using Autodesk Revit software; implementing theses; designing complex BIM models (architecture, engineering networks, heat and ventilation, and water supply aspects combined); elective course “Digital Modeling in Civil Engineering”; trainings for University employees and professionals; annual international conference “BIM in Construction and Architecture” and BIM-Championship for students and young researchers.
